It is with regret that I have to inform you that Gary Cooper has resigned as President of the Australia Branch.John Linn the VP has agreed to step up and be President. I’m sure we will all give him the support he needs to lead the branch forward.

It is with regret that I have to resign from the post of President of Branch. My increased commitments with family and work have made it extremely difficult for me to find the required time to do the position justice.

With the upcoming visit of the one and only Pat Stanton it is imperative that the people who are working so hard to organise this receive maximum support from the branch president. I realised at this time I am unable to fulfil this role.

I remain a committed member of the branch and will continue to provide my full support to the organisation. I am also happy to remain as state rep for NSW in the interim.

IS FRED A CLOSET JAMBO/HUN?
News of my strange behaviour (i.e. allowing a Hearts strip in my home) has surprised many. Now there is even more cause for rumour mongering!
On a coat hanger next to a John Robertson donated Hearts jersey now hangs a fair dinkum Rangers match strip. I kid you not. It is the red away strip and was donated by former Hibs captain and now Ibrox regular Ian Murray. The strip naturally has ‘Murray’ on the back along with a number 18, and Ian has kindly arranged for the rest of the Ibrox squad to autograph the strip along with his own signature.
Ian inevitably upset a few Hibbies with his move to the Forces of Darkness, but even the most churlish among us would appreciate him taking the time and effort to come to our assistance, and prove that he may play for the Huns, but deep down he’s still one of us. After all, as we all know you can take the boy out of Leith, but…..
Ian’s magnificent donation should attract a fair auction price from our Weedgie friends, so if you have any chums, who are Rangers supporters, make them aware of Ian’s donation and drag them along on the night of the auction.
With a collection of Hibs, Hearts and Rangers strips up for auction, the assembled throng should be quite varied, and could make for ‘passionate’ half time entertainment should there be any disagreement among the various factions!!

COUNTING DOWN THE MONTHS

The Pat Stanton tour in 2009 will kick off at Perth’s Joondalup country resort on the last day of January. One week later it will be version two at a yet to be decided location in the capital of the garden state, Melbourne, before drawing to a close with a function in Sydney on Valentine’s day, 14^th February.
It may seem a long way away, but given that soon our thoughts will be turning away from ‘tax time’ towards Santa Claus time, it’s not really that far away.
Hopefully Pat’s visit to Melbourne this time around will be a bit happier than his last.
While touring with Celtic in the mid 70’s he was sent off against Red Star Belgrade for punching an opponent!

The Legend Tour comes to an end Sydney Feb 17th 2007.

After a few days recuperation at work it was off to Sydney. We went down/up on the overnight train and managed to sleep for most of the 6-hour journey. We got off at Campbelltown to be met by Fred after a couple of breakfasts and a bit more resting of the eyes and then we headed in to Sydney Central. We had a bit of a walk, a bit of lunch, a couple of beers and back to the room to get ready for the night.

Sydney is Sydney… nothing compares to the harbour it is truly magnificent.

This was always going to be the part of the tour for jimmy and Anne to unwind before the long Flight home.

We had a few beers at Circular Key at the “Paragon Hotel” where I managed to miss John Walker and Tricia. Dashed to the side of the Opera house to board the MV Royale or the “Vital Spark” to us.

What a backdrop, the bridge, the opera house, the Oriana, the skyline and the sun setting. No wonder jimmy said that this was the 2^nd most beautiful city in the world, no guessing what is first.

We had an auction, we had a raffle, and we had singing… and we had Jimmy O’Rourke. We had a question and answers session. Jimmy read his “ode to the Scottish Cup” again and I was off before he had even started. And we danced… well sort of! We sang ‘Jimmy, Jimmy O’Rourke everyone knows his name” “Flower O Scotland” “Glory Glory to the Hibees” ”Loch Lomond” “Sunshine on Leith” “There is a bonnie fitba team at Easter Road they play” and of course “ Shite shite load of old shite” plus many many more.

Sadly the night had to end so we went to the “Man O War” at the docks for another couple of beers, then we got hungry and went for a Maccas. I had the cheek to say I wanted another beer but Wilma said it was off to bed for me.

Thanks to Gary Cooper and Brendan Rogan for organising such a superb night, which is a bit ironic because Brendan brother is Brian one of the mainstays of London Hibs.

A couple of things to finish off.

I spoke to Jimmy’s wife Anne (quite a few times) but I was surprised to know that when she met Jimmy she did not know who he was. But now she does and she also knows “everyone knows his nameJ”

My wife was knocked out to see how much grown men held Jimmy O’Rourke in such high regard. They brought old programs, books and photographs for him to sign. Nothing was too much trouble to him; even at breakfast he would sign whatever.

This tour was a learning curve for us. I personally hope we can repeat this again. We made a few mistakes but hopefully not too many people noticed. As I told Jimmy, he was the guinea pig and so I asked him for his feedback but that is for another time.

It was a pleasure to meet Jimmy O’Rourke and we could not have wished for a better first time “Legend”. He took his role as an ambassador of the Hibernian Football Club very seriously. I feel like I known Jimmy O’Rourke for a lifetime and I have, but from afar, but to finally meet the man, Well words cannot describe him. I know he loves us, the fans, as much as we love him.

“The pen neck shirt tour” well anyone who has seen any of Fred’s emails to the ozhibs list will know that he does not use spell check.

Jimmy wrote to Fred asking what to wear at the dinners? And Fred writes back a ‘pen neck shirt”. “ Whits a pen neck shirt? So Jimmy and Anne look up the Internet for a pen neck shirt, but she says to Jimmy dinnae worry, we can always buy one in Australia. You can imagine the laughter when Jimmy finally asked Fred what is a pen neck shirt and explain what has happened. Fred said, “I must have missed the “O” it was an “open neck shirt”

I’ll never ever forget this tour and its showed me that Jimmy O’Rourke was and still is just like us… a Hibernian supporter.

Good news for existing Foxtel subscribers like me who sit up into the wee sma hours watching EPL games when really all I want to see is the Hibs!
Setanta who have the rights for SPL coverage, have confirmed that they expect do a deal with Fox in September that in effect will see an additional channel being made available which will carry SPL games. Subscription rates have not yet been negotiated, but it IS coming, and if you are a Foxtel subscriber it will probably mean that all you have to do is increase the rate of your current subscription to cover the Setanta channel.
At the moment it is possible to get Setanta beamed into your home, but there is a set up fee of $495 for the dish on top the monthly subscription. Come September it will be beamed via your Foxtel connection.

HOME OR AWAY
As reported in the last edition of HWG! a fund raising night for the Pat Stanton visit is being held at Moonee Valley on November 24^th.A collection of football items will be auctioned, and one of those will be last year’s goalkeepers strip worn by Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer during Middlesbrough’s Premier League campaign.
I wrongly reported that it was Boro’s ‘home’ strip, but Mark has corrected me and advised that it was in fact his away strip.
The Socceroo custodian has signed the strip and this authentic EPL club strip that has been seen by literally millions on the television, is sure to be a sought after item.
Mark was one of the few players who were considered to be a success during Australia’s recent unsuccessful Asian Cup campaign, and with no viable competitors on the horizon, having just earned his 50^th cap, the Boro goalie looks like being Socceroo custodian well into the foreseeable future.
There will be a range of other items up for grabs, and we’ll bring you news of some of them in future editions, but on a Hibs related theme you will have the chance to bid for a range of items including (a) an autographed copy of Eddie Turnbull’s book “Having A Ball’ which was donated by one James O’Rourke, (b) a copy of a famous signed print of the ‘Famous Five’ training together at Easter Road, and (c) the match programme from the equally famous Hibs v Barcelona European game played in 1961. The match programme may show the cost as sixpence, but its value is listed today in one programme shop as 25 pounds, so some lucky collector may be able to nab a bargain at Moonee Valley.

TIME OUT
Finally, a word of appreciation to Gary Cooper, who has temporarily at least, stood down form the mantle of el Presidente as a result of pressing family commitments. A new baby and house extensions means there is little time in today’s hurly burly lifestyle left over, and rather than over commit, Gary has reluctantly decided to step down.
Speaking from a personal viewpoint, I managed the new baby bit when it came around adequately, but can admit to being overwhelmed when it came to a refurbishment project I was involved in 20 years ago. It seemed like all I was doing for several months was going to work and hammering nails in Gyprock, so Gary’s reasons are entirely understandable.!
Hopefully his absence will only be of a temporary nature, and I know from a NSW perspective that Gary did much to rejuvenate the branch in our state, and he can also lay claim to being President when our first ever ‘Legend’ tour was successfully completed.

I came to Australia in 2002 with my work, went home to Scotland in 2004 but got very cold and returned permanently in 2005. I’m 38 years old, now based in Brisbane and married to Hilary with two children, and I work as an accountant, zzzzzz….First Hibs game was v Motherwell and must have been 1976 or thereabouts. Best memories include the Souness sending off game at ER and the Videoton game in Hungary. Used to travel with the very unofficial Corstorphine Inn Hibs SC prior to marriage, children and moving down under! I was watching the Brisbane Lions AFL match with my father in law last night and he reckons watching the Lions these days is the same as watching Hibs….

Well the preseason is over and it’s on to the serious stuff, and they don’t come anymore serious than the jambos at Tynie.Its JC team now so lets see what he is made of. A goalie that does not throw the ball in his own net would be a great start; Ma-Kalambay seems to be not to bad. Kerr and O’Brien seem OK (just hope O’Brien is not injury prone 2 weeks to get over a sour ankle). Donaldson I’m not to sure about, he seems get into good position but cannot put them in the net.Anyway next week will tell.Glory, Glory to the Hibees.Peter Hart
